Hyderabad: Himayat Ali Mirza, the great-grandson of the 7th Nizam, has called on Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to help resolve the hostel crisis at Nizam College. He highlighted the recent closure of the hostel mess and stressed the need for a long-term solution to protect institutions known for their public service.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, Himayat Ali explained that the college had to halt its hostel mess services due to severe financial issues. On June 12, food vendors stopped delivering groceries as they hadn’t been paid for months. The college owed Rs 40–45 lakh to suppliers and was waiting for Rs 16.5 crore in reimbursements from the state since 2019. This financial strain forced the college to stop providing meals, affecting hundreds of students.
During this time, many students, particularly from middle-class families, had to spend Rs 100 – Rs 150 daily on food from outside. Additionally, the mess workers have not received their salaries for over three months. Although temporary funds have been secured to restart the mess services, the situation is still unstable without immediate intervention.
Himayat Ali, guided by his philanthropic values, donated Rs 1 lakh to support the college hostel temporarily. However, he emphasized that state responsibility is crucial to ensure students are never left without food in educational settings.
He urged Revanth Reddy to promptly address the unpaid dues to Nizam College, its suppliers, and staff, and to establish sustainable financial support to maintain the hostel and mess services consistently.
