TSRTC MD VC Sajjanar from Hyderabad recently shared some important advice regarding cyber criminals who are committing fraud by posing as police officers and claiming that drug parcels have arrived. He emphasized the importance of not responding to any phone calls or IVR calls related to drug parcels and suggested reporting such incidents to the cybercrime helpline 1930. Sajjanar expressed concern over the fact that many victims, including highly educated individuals, have fallen prey to these scams.
One particular incident highlighted by Sajjanar involved a PhD scholar from IIT Hyderabad who lost Rs 30 lakh after answering such fraudulent calls. The scholar was manipulated into believing that there was a threat to his family’s life by terrorist sleeper cells, leading to his confinement at home for 6 days under the guise of house arrest. Sajjanar warned that cyber criminals are using tactics like impersonating police officers and making threats related to drugs and bank transactions to extort large sums of money.
Sajjanar’s message serves as a cautionary reminder to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unexpected phone calls, especially those involving sensitive or alarming information. It is important to verify the authenticity of such calls and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities to prevent falling victim to scams orchestrated by cyber criminals.
