The Telangana government has encountered a challenge in the Supreme Court concerning Backward Class (BC) reservations. The court, with Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, decided that the issue should be settled in the High Court. They noted the hearings will continue and allowed elections to proceed with the current reservation system.
In the courtroom, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the state, argued that all parties agree on BC reservations in Telangana. He challenged the idea that reservations should not exceed 50%, citing past judgments like the Indira Sawhney case that support reservations based on detailed data.
Previously, the Telangana High Court paused the 42% BC reservation and stopped the GO 9. The state approached the Supreme Court but faced setbacks, creating uncertainty for the government.
The response of the state government to this situation is yet to be seen.
