Hyderabad: On Thursday, Dr. K Nagaratna, the head of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad, spoke about using advanced technology for weather monitoring. Tools like Doppler radar, satellite images, and GIS-based imaging are helping to integrate weather data into the city’s emergency systems.
A significant meeting took place under Director V B Kamalasan Reddy at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) War Room. The main focus was to improve preparations for the monsoon season.
Dr. Nagaratna shared detailed information about the IMD’s forecasting strengths, covering short to long-term predictions. She explained essential weather patterns like the low-level jet and tropical easterly jet, vital for precise forecasts.
The meeting highlighted the need to merge IMD data with TGICCC’s advanced systems. These include the integrated traffic management and automatic number plate recognition systems. The functionality of public addressing systems and message boards was also reviewed to ensure they work well during the monsoon.
Discussions also covered past rainfall patterns, the advance of the Southwest Monsoon in 2025, and occurrences of extreme weather. They talked about sending advisories and warnings through various channels, like the SACHET mobile app, to keep officials and the public informed.
The meeting ended with a commitment from all departments to collaborate, using modern technology and meteorological insights, to ensure people’s safety during the monsoon.
