Secunderabad: In a significant act of service, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, and Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association, decided to donate their organs. This pledge took place at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi on Thursday. Their decision is a key step forward for the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA), which promotes organ donation awareness within the military.
Under the leadership of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, AORTA has become a national leader in organ donation. The Indian Army has already achieved a significant milestone, with over 26,000 personnel committing to donate organs in a single campaign.
During the event, General Dwivedi described organ donation as “a service to humanity” and a continuation of the Armed Forces’ dedication to sacrifice and bravery. He encouraged service members and their families to support this life-saving cause and set an example for others.
In recognition of healthcare workers, the Chief of the Army Staff presented Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three key staff involved in transplant care. This included a housekeeper whose commitment to cleanliness and patient care was particularly praised, highlighting the compassionate ethos of the Army Medical Corps.
The ceremony also honored families of organ donors, acknowledging their bravery and generosity in giving the gift of life. These families were celebrated with a heartfelt tribute.
With AORTA’s leadership and the symbolic commitment from the Army’s senior officials, the Armed Forces are inspiring a nationwide movement, turning acts of valor into a new lease on life.
