Hyderabad – The Telangana government has decided to build permanent homes for the Chenchu tribal community, providing a major boost to their living conditions. Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced that around 10,000 houses will be constructed under the Indiramma Indlu scheme.
The government identified nearly 10,000 Chenchu families who currently have no proper housing. These families live in forest areas under the jurisdiction of four Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs)—Utnoor, Bhadrachalam, Munnanur, and Eturunagaram.
Out of the total planned homes, 9,395 houses have already been sanctioned. These homes will be distributed across various districts:
– Asifabad – 3,551 houses
– Boath – 695 houses
– Khanapur – 1,802 houses
– Sirpur – 311 houses
– Adilabad – 1,430 houses
– Bellampalli – 326 houses
– Aswaraopet – 105 houses
– Achampet – 518 houses
– Mahabubnagar – 153 houses
– Parigi – 138 houses
– Tandur – 184 houses
The Minister held a review meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday to assess the progress of the Indiramma housing program. He emphasized that both Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy have repeatedly stressed the importance of developing tribal areas, especially by providing stable housing.
“The Chenchus are a forest-dwelling tribe who survive by hunting and gathering forest produce,” the Minister said. “They have never had the chance to live in permanent homes and continue to stay in huts deep in the forests. That’s why the government has decided to build houses for them right where they live.”
This marks the first time any government has taken steps to build permanent homes for the Chenchus within their native forest areas. The initiative aims to improve their quality of life while preserving their connection to the land.
