Cyber criminals are actively targeting citizens amid the ongoing shortage of LPG gas cylinders by creating fake websites and fraudulent booking platforms. The Cyber Crime Unit of Hyderabad has issued an urgent alert warning residents about the increasing number of scams related to LPG gas bookings as desperate consumers search online for quick delivery options.
Fraudsters are sending fake SMS messages, WhatsApp texts, and social media advertisements claiming to offer LPG cylinders at discounted prices or promising immediate delivery. These deceptive messages often contain suspicious links that redirect users to counterfeit websites designed to steal personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.
The fake websites are carefully designed to resemble official LPG company portals, making it difficult for ordinary users to distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent platforms. These sites typically ask for advance payments through online modes and collect sensitive banking details, OTPs, and UPI PINs from victims who believe they are making genuine bookings.
Authorities have advised citizens to book LPG cylinders only through official websites, authorized mobile applications, or registered distributors. Consumers should never trust unknown websites or links that claim to provide instant LPG booking or guaranteed quick delivery, especially those requiring immediate online payment.
Officials emphasize that users should never share their OTP, bank account details, or UPI PIN with anyone claiming to arrange LPG cylinders on their behalf. Legitimate LPG distributors and companies do not ask for such sensitive information through calls, messages, or unofficial channels.
The cyber crime unit has warned that any website or message promising urgent or guaranteed LPG delivery after online payment should be treated as a potential fraud. Citizens are urged to verify the authenticity of any booking platform before making payments or sharing personal information.
Those who have fallen victim to such cyber fraud schemes are advised to take immediate action by calling the national cyber crime helpline at 1930 or filing a complaint on the official portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Quick reporting can help authorities track down fraudsters and potentially prevent further financial losses.
The alert comes as part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to protect citizens from the rising tide of online scams. The Cyber Crime Unit continues to monitor suspicious activities and urges the public to remain vigilant while conducting any online transactions related to essential services during shortage situations.
