Khammam, Telangana – Farmers in Telangana are raising their voices against what they call anti-farmer policies by the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Telangana Farmers’ Association is urging people across the country to support a nationwide rural bandh on May 20 as a form of protest.
During a farmers’ meeting in Thootikuntla village, located in Bonakal mandal, association leaders Bonthu Rambabu and Thulluru Ramesh addressed the growing concerns. They said the current agriculture policies are hurting farmers, leaving many in financial distress.
According to the leaders, farmers are struggling to sell their crops at fair prices. Many are forced to sell their produce at extremely low rates, which barely cover their costs. They believe the system is broken and needs urgent change.
The association is demanding that the government implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations. These include ensuring Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for crops are not only increased but also made legally binding. This would guarantee farmers a fair income and protect them from market fluctuations.
They also criticized international trade decisions that further impact Indian agriculture. They pointed to comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who, during his second term, spoke about hiking trade tariffs. The association believes such actions add more pressure on Indian farmers.
The Telangana Farmers’ Association is calling on citizens, especially those in rural areas, to join the May 20 bandh. They hope this united protest will draw national attention to the ongoing agricultural crisis and push the government to take action.
