Hyderabad – To ease traffic and make roads safer, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) launched a major anti-encroachment operation on the Asifnagar-Jhirra Road.
Officials cleared footpaths that were blocked by illegal sheds, kiosks, and stalls. These structures had been causing serious traffic jams and making life difficult for both drivers and pedestrians.
Using JCB machines, GHMC workers removed several temporary setups that spilled over onto the sidewalks and parts of the main road. The drive aimed to restore clear paths for walking and driving.
Working alongside the traffic police, GHMC targeted unauthorized shop extensions, including a pan shop outside a hotel in Asifnagar and stalls set up near the Gowtham Model School. These were found to be violating public space rules.
While the action helped open up the roads, some local shopkeepers and vendors expressed frustration. Many said the sudden demolitions hurt their businesses and daily earnings.
GHMC explained that this is part of a larger mission to remove illegal structures across the city. The goal is to improve traffic movement and protect pedestrian safety by reclaiming public spaces.
Officials also cleared pushcarts and temporary sheds that were blocking the roads. They called these obstructions a major reason for slow-moving traffic in busy areas.
A GHMC spokesperson confirmed the drive will continue in other parts of the city. “We are committed to keeping public spaces clear and ensuring smooth traffic flow,” he said.
This operation reflects GHMC’s ongoing efforts to manage urban congestion and maintain clean, accessible roads for everyone in Hyderabad.
