Nala works in Falaknuma flagged for slow progress by residents in Hyderabad.

Residents of Falaknuma are concerned about the slow progress of nala works in their area. The GHMC south zone promised to prevent flooding in the area, but residents remain worried about the upcoming rainy season. Al-Jubail colony in Falaknuma was badly affected by flooding during the previous rainy season, as the open nala overflowed and submerged the area for nearly 15 days. Although the GHMC sanctioned Rs 6 crore for nala works, they have yet to be completed.

After the flood in 2020, GHMC began constructing a retaining wall for the open nala, but progress has been slow, and it remains unfinished. Residents fear that if there are heavy downpours during the upcoming monsoon, the situation could be equally disastrous. Al-Jubail colony was particularly affected, with many buildings left vacant after last year’s severe monsoon.

Although GHMC demolished encroachments on the nala and constructed a retaining wall, residents have pointed out that an improper drainage network is another major reason for the inundation of colonies in this area. The existing drainage system is unable to handle the increased sewage outflows resulting from significant population and household growth. The residents have repeatedly complained to the authorities about this issue, urging them to take it seriously. However, no action has been taken so far.
