GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. has proudly announced that Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has achieved the LEED Platinum certification. This is a prestigious recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council for outstanding green building practices.
The terminal earned an impressive 84 points, placing it among the most environmentally friendly airports globally. GHIAL received accolades for its efforts in energy conservation, efficient water use, resource management, and maintaining high indoor air quality.
The newly expanded terminal, which added approximately 379,370 square meters, was designed with environmental considerations in mind. It features energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, effective insulation, and LED lighting equipped with sensors to minimize electricity consumption.
Water conservation is achieved through rainwater harvesting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and the use of drought-resistant landscaping. Recycled materials were sourced locally to reduce emissions.
To decrease waste, the airport has implemented paperless boarding and self-service baggage check-ins. An intelligent system manages energy usage and ensures air quality, adhering to LEED guidelines.
Mr. Indana Prabhakara Rao of GMR Group highlighted that this award underscores their dedication to constructing sustainable buildings. GHIAL is committed to operating eco-friendly airports while maintaining excellent service standards.
This accomplishment illustrates how thoughtful design and environmental stewardship can coexist. LEED is recognized worldwide as a standard for green buildings, and this award positions GHIAL as a leader in sustainable airport development, reflecting their commitment to environmental protection.
