Telangana Faces Surge in Dengue and Chikungunya Cases

Telangana is experiencing a significant rise in dengue cases this year. By October 31, the state reported 9,761 dengue cases, surpassing the 8,016 cases recorded in 2023. Over 3,000 of these cases were reported in the months of September and October alone.

The increase in dengue cases has been rapid. By August 31, the state had 6,405 cases, which means there was a sharp rise of 3,356 cases in just two months. Dengue is caused by the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, and the rainy monsoon season creates ideal conditions for these mosquitoes to breed in stagnant water.

Along with dengue, Telangana has also seen a rise in chikungunya and malaria cases. By October 31, there were 235 malaria cases, which is slightly higher than the 200 cases reported in August. However, this number remains lower compared to the 420 malaria cases recorded in 2023.

Chikungunya cases, on the other hand, have increased significantly. From 178 cases in August, the number rose to 435 by the end of October. By November 21, the state reported 447 chikungunya cases after testing a total of 13,320 samples.

To address this health crisis, the Telangana Health Department has taken multiple measures. During the monsoon season, they intensified disease surveillance and held coordination meetings to ensure a better response. The department also focused on controlling mosquito breeding sites.

Additionally, the health department ensured that hospitals and health facilities were well-equipped with testing kits and medicines to handle the surge in cases. These efforts aim to curb the spread of these mosquito-borne diseases in the state.
