The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced its most extensive sanitation initiative, set to begin on December 29, 2025 and continue until January 31, 2026. The special drive will cover all 300 wards of the city in a comprehensive effort to transform Hyderabad into a cleaner and greener metropolis.

The campaign will focus on multiple critical areas of urban sanitation. The civic body plans to remove legacy waste accumulated over time and clear garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) that have become eyesores across the city. The drive will also target cleaning of foot overbridges, flyovers, roads, dividers, and medians to improve the city’s overall appearance.

Special attention will be given to clearing lakes, nalas, parks, and footpaths. The initiative includes proper management of construction and demolition waste along with green waste. In an innovative approach, the GHMC plans to transform identified garbage vulnerable points into attractive selfie points, combining aesthetics with cleanliness.

The sanitation drive emphasizes strong community participation. Swachhata awareness drives will be conducted across neighborhoods, with special cleanliness pledges involving children and youth. The corporation will organize collection drives for e-waste and reusable items. Schools will receive special focus for promoting waste segregation and composting practices among students.

Enforcement measures form a crucial component of this initiative. The GHMC will impose spot fines for violations including littering, open urination, and illegal dumping of waste. Unclaimed scrap vehicles will be removed from public spaces, and dilapidated public toilets will undergo renovation to improve sanitation infrastructure.

To ensure effective implementation, the civic body has established a robust monitoring system. This includes daily ward-wise reporting, geo-tagging of cleaned areas, and comprehensive photo documentation. The GHMC will deploy municipal solid waste vehicles, JCBs, and dedicated sanitation teams across all zones.

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan has issued clear directives to all field officers, emphasizing the need for 100% ward clearance and seamless coordination among departments. The commissioner has called for active participation from citizens to make this initiative a success and establish Hyderabad as a model city of cleanliness.
