Khammam: The Central government outlined its plans to support livelihoods, boost renewable energy, and enhance food security in areas impacted by coal mine closures during a session in the Lok Sabha. Khammam MP Ramasahayam Raghurama Reddy raised questions about the transition from coal, renewable energy progress, and the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
In response, Union Ministers shared written updates on the government’s sustainable development strategies. Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, announced that as of January 31, 2024, guidelines are in place for mine closures, focusing on rehabilitation for affected families. The aim is to minimize negative impacts on workers and communities, ensuring a fair transition.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik reported that by June 30, 2024, India reached a renewable energy capacity of 43,922 megawatts. Contributions come from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), NTPC, and other agencies. The government is speeding up Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) and updating bidding guidelines to expand solar and wind energy projects.
Regarding food security, Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution, Nimuben Jayantibhai Bamania, stated that the NFSA currently aids 81.35 crore people, based on the 2011 Census. These efforts show the government’s commitment to managing the shift from coal reliance while maintaining essential services like food distribution.
