Hyderabad: Residents in Hyderabad have raised concerns about the behavior of some transgender individuals who demand money during special occasions. While this practice has been seen before, people now say that these individuals are going too far by causing disturbances on roads and insulting those who refuse to pay. Locals are urging the authorities to take strict action.
In response, police from all three Commissionerates, along with the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), have arrested dozens of transgender individuals across the city. These people were reportedly involved in inappropriate acts like exposing themselves and making obscene gestures in public to get attention, creating discomfort for others.
A resident from Narsingi said that transgender groups show up during events like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and poojas. If they are not given money, they start shouting, using bad language, and disturbing the event.
Shop owners are also facing problems. Naveen, who owns a shop in Badangpet, shared that he felt forced to pay them to avoid being insulted in front of customers. He said they often use abusive language when refused money.
Several videos have gone viral on social media showing such behavior. In one case, the Rachakonda Police Commissioner responded to a video on the platform X (formerly Twitter), asking the Meerpet police to take action against those involved.
One recent incident took place during a bhumi pooja (groundbreaking ceremony) in Gurrampudi village under the Rachakonda Commissionerate. A group of transgender individuals allegedly refused to leave when they weren’t paid and behaved inappropriately, including using offensive language and gestures.
As part of their ongoing operations, police have taken more than 50 transgender individuals into custody for causing public nuisance. These operations have been carried out over several months by special AHTU teams working with local police.
Raids were held at several known locations where such behavior was reported. Officials said those arrested were involved in indecent acts in public. A senior police officer stated that patrolling teams have been told to monitor areas where transgender individuals often gather and to take steps to manage any disturbances.
